| Liverpool Captain Jordan Henderson lifting the Premier League Title |
The Long Wait for Liverpool Fans was over. 30 years.30 long years since they last saw their team lift the league crown, Liverpool lifted the Premier League title on Wednesday night at Anfield in their final home game of the season.
Normally 54,000 fans would have welcomed them along singing the evergreen anthem "You'll Never Walk Alone" but due to the global pandemic going on the matches were forced to play behind closed doors with no crowd in attendance. But that didn't stop Liverpool from celebrating the night.
Going into the match Liverpool knew that they can no longer match the "Centurions" as they can only clinch 99 points, only 99 points! But seriously, after coming agonizing close last season and losing the title to Man City by 1 point with 97 points, they knew they needed more than that to win the league. Liverpool kept that form of last season whereas City stumbled up the path.
Liverpool faced Chelsea at Anfield, where the visitors Chelsea knew they couldn't afford to drop points further if they were to qualify for the Champions League next season. With Man United's frustrating draw with West Ham,moved the Red Devils to third ahead of Chelsea on Goal Difference,The Blues needed to responded.
Liverpool were already in a celebratory mood when they walked out and raced to a 3-0 lead at 43rd minute thanks to goals from Baby Keita, Trent Alexander Arnold and Georginio Wijnaldum. Oliver Giroud pulled one back in first half injury time to make it 3-1 at Half Time.
Roberto Firmino had been criticized the entire season for not scoring a Premier League Goal at Anfield. What better way was to score it in the last home game of the season. His strike in 55th minute mad it 4-1 to the Reds. In the 59th minute Chelsea brought on Tammy Abraham and Christian Pulisic.
The move payed off as both Abraham and Pulisic would go on to score in the 61st and 73rd Minute respectively to make it 4-3 and give the Blues a hope for a miraculous comeback but it was cut short when Oxlade Chamberlain scored in the 83rd Minute to make it 5-3 and ensure Liverpool the win.
The result meant Liverpool have not lost a home game for three seasons now. Talk about a Paradise. They finished the season at Anfield with a 18-1-0 record of 18 wins and 1 draw. Astonishing.
Chelsea will now face a tough test for the Champions League spot as they face high flying Wolves who are looking for a Europa League spot and Liverpool travel to Newcastle United to hope to achieve and finish with 99 points.
