| Gabriel Jesus had a hand in 3 of the 4 goals in the Round of 16 tie between Real Madrid |
After 5 long months, Europe biggest club Competition returned to finish what it started. With the Europa League already back, on Friday it was time for the Champions League to be back and it didn't disappointed.
The Biggest Match of the Round of 16 was arguably Manchester City vs Real Madrid. With their famous 2-1 away win in Spain in February, Manchester City came into the match with a season of disappointment having finished 2nd but 18 points behind Liverpool. Real Madrid had enjoyed a great restart as they won 10 of their 11 La Liga Games to become Kings of Spain for the 34th time.
Real Madrid were without their Skipper Sergio Ramos who was sent off in the first leg and his absence really hurted Madrid. Less than 10 minutes in and Experienced Centre Back and World Cup Winner Raphael Varane committed a mistake at the back when he easily lost the ball to Jesus who teased up Sterling to make it 1-0 on the night for the Citizens. City kept on pressing for a second goal but couldn't find it.
Karim Benzema had been the stand out man for Real Madrid this season and he pulled one back after a superb lob ball from Rodrygo to make it 1-1. That how the score remained at Half Time with City and Madrid exchanging blows after blows.
But the decisive moment came in the second half courtesy of another Varane mistake as he headed the ball back to his keeper Courtois who had rushed out his goal and City striker Jesus who had already settled up Sterling, pounched on that error and slotted the ball home to make it 2-1 on the night and 4-2 on aggregate. City could have had more but it was enough for them to go through to the last 8 on the expense of Madrid.
Lyon stunned the world, as they eliminated Juventus out of the Competition. Leading 1-0 on aggregate thanks to a win in France. Lyon played their first competitive match since March and knew a draw would be enough to go through. They went 1-0 ahead on the night through a controversial penalty from Memphis Depay to go 2-0 on aggregate. Juventus levelled from the spot through another controversial decision as Cristiano Ronaldo slammed in the penalty.
Ronaldo got a second in the second half to level up the tie at 2-2 but needed one more to goal to go through due to Lyon leading on Away Goals. Lyon held on that scoreline and lost the match 2-1 but won the tie 2-2 on Away Goal Rule. They will know face Manchester City in the Quarter Final.
