From July 2020-January 2021 the Railways have caught around 600 people providing Fake IDs as multiple cases of Fake Identification have been registered by the the government railway police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF).

Mumbai Locals which were suspended from March 23 due to COVID-19 were resumed for commerical and essential workers in July. The workers were needed to provide an Identification of their work to be allowed to use the Mumbai Local.

"During our regular checking, we have found many passengers trying to travel with fake identity cards.Majority of cards have been found by pharmaceutical companies, diagnostic and imaging centres" said a Senior CR offical.

Yesterday the Western Railway (WR) with the help of RPF arrested a 21 year old man from Virar who was providing fake ID cards of government and non government sectors to people who wished to use the Mumbai Local for travel.

He was arrested after his message was traced down on the messaging app of Telegram.

Sumit Thakur Chief PR Officer of the WR said "Travelling with unauthorised ID Cards is a punishable offence. Hence WR appeals to passengers that only those specific essential categories,as notified by the Maharashtra Government should travel in local time."

The Government is yet to take a decision on the allowance of common people to travel by Mumbai Locals. With the decrease of number of Covid-19 cases and the arrival of vaccine, a decision may come soon.
