Atletico Madrid crowned Champions of Spain

An enthralling title race in the La Liga came to an end on Saturday night as Atletico Madrid came from behind to win 2-1 against Real Valladolid to become champions. This was their first league triumph since the 2013-14 season.

Having being top of the table since November, Atletico looked to be crusing away with the title by the end of year with them being ahead atleast 10 points ahead at a time.

However they suffered a slump in mid season and soon the one horse title race turned into a three way tie with Real Madrid and FC Barcelona picking up form at the right time. Barcelona's title charge ended a week ago after they suffered a 2-1 home loss to Celta Vigo.

Going into the final game, Atletico were two points ahead of their city rivals Real Madrid. They knew all they have to do is match Real's result. For Real though, they needed to win and hope for some results to go in their way.

With both games kicking off simultaneously, the pressure was on. Surprisingly both sides went 1-0 at half in their matches as Atletico conceded through a counter attack from Valladolid, whereas Real had their hearts crushed due to Villarreal.

Both games changed in the second half as both of them game back to win 2-1. Atletico equalized in the 57th minute, the same minute when Real had their goal disallowed by VAR for Offside. Atletico then took the lead in the 67th minute when former Barcelona man Luis Suarez, deemed to be unfit by the Catalian Club, made his mark.

At that time Real were still trailing. Two late goals from Karim Benzema in the 87th minute and Luka Modric in injury time turned the game around. But it was not enough to turn the sail around as Atletico's game was over.

This marks Atletico's 11th League Triumph, thier first since 2013-14 which also came under Diego Simone. For Real, it turned out to be an injury-prone trophyless season.
