Maharashtra Government extends lockdown till May 31; temporarily suspends vaccination for 18-44 years

In an attempt to contain the spread of COVID-19 in the state, the Maharashtra Government has extended the existing lockdown till May 31. This decision was taken by a cabinet meeting of ministers on Wednesday.

The other significant decision taken in the meeting was the temporarily suspension of vaccination drive of age group 18-44. The shortages in supply of vaccines is the key reason for this decision.

  • "There is a dearth of vaccines, hence we're considering holding off vaccination drive temporarily for the 18-44 age group. 2.75 lakh vaccine doses are left for this age group that'll now be used for 45 years and above group. Administering the second dose is a priority" said Rajesh Tope.

On Wednesday, the state reported a slight increase following recent dips with 46,781 new cases, around 6,000 more than on Tuesday. The state also reported 816 fatalities. The active cases in Maharashtra stands over at 5,46,000.
