Mucormycosis patients to be treated free of cost under health schemes: Maha Govt to Bombay High Court

On Monday, the Maharashtra Government told the Aurangabad Bench of the Bombay High Court that the fungal ailment, Mucormycosis will now be covered under the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Aarogya Yojana and the Pradhan Mantri Jan Aarogya Yojana and that the citizens will receive free treatment for Mucormycosis at pre-identified hospitals.

The Government told the Court that they have identified around 130 hospitals across the state for the treatment of anti-fungal ailments. Citizens, even who don't hold any cards for the above insurance scheme, will get treatment for free at any facility.

The state also added that 1000 more hospitals will be empanelled for treating mucormycosis under the above two mentioned schemes. Anti-fungal Medicines will be provided free of cost and private hospitals will also be restrained from "raising astronomical bills".

  • The High Court said "It is thus, apparent that the state of Maharashtra has come up with a specific policy to treat mucormycosis. Private hospitals too will be restricted from raising astronomical bills. We therefore, expect the state government to accord wide publicity to this policy so that the poorest of poor, the illiterate and semi illiterate and persons in remote and tribal areas become aware of the same."
