Brief Synopsis-

The film opens in the year 1957 (the present day at the time of shooting) where Radha(Nargis) who is considered to be "mother" of the village is about to inaugurate a canal. She suddenly remembers her past when she was newly married.

Her marriage with Shamu (Raaj Kumar) is completed by the money borrowed by Shamu's mother in law from a moneylender Sukhilala(Kanhaiyalal). One day Shamu meets an accident and loses both of his arms. Ashamed of that, he decided to walk away from him and dies due to starvation. Radha is soon left with her two sons, as his mother in law and her youngest soon passes away. The village is soon hit by storm which causes her miscarriage and the death of her fourth son.

Several years later her two surviving sons Bijru ( Sunil Dutt) and Ramu (Rajendra Kumar) have grown up but with different personalities. Bijru turns into a bandit due to the traumatic childhood by Sukhilala. On the wedding day of Sukhilala's daughter Rupa, Bijru returns and kidnaps her. As he was about to flee from the village on his horse, he is confronted by her mother. Refusing to let go of Rupa, Radha is left with no choice but to shoot her son and kill him, who dies in her arms. The film then ends on the present day as Radha opens the gates of the Canal.
