14 cases of ZikaVirus found in Kerala

 

As if COVID-19 wasn't enough, a mosquito-borne viral infection named Zika, has now been officially confirmed for the first time in Kerala. The virus was detected in the blood samples of a pregnant woman from a district in Kerala. Further 19 samples were sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune, which confirmed 13 more cases taking the tally to 14 cases.

The woman had reported to a private hospital of having fever, rashes on the body and conjunctivitis and was admitted on June 28. The woman, who was also in her final few weeks of gestation, has since successfully delivered and the baby is reported to be stable. 

According to World Health Organization (WHO), Zika is a mosquito-borne virus that spreads through the bite of an infected Aedes species of mosquito named Aedes Aegypti. These mosquitoes usually bite in the day and are said to be the same who transmit Dengue, Yellow Fever and Chikungunya.

Zika can be a very dangerous disease among pregnant woman, especially for foetuses. The infection can cause brain disability condition.
