Covaxin may get approval "within next 24 hours", says WHO Official

A technical committee of the World Health Organization (WHO) could recommend the Emergency Use Approval of Covaxin withing 24 hours. This was informed by Margaret Harris, spokesperson of WHO.

Harris told the mediapersons that the body is currently reviewing data on Covaxin and is likely to get approved soon.

"If all is in place and all goes well and if the committee is satisfied, we would expect a recommendation within the next 24 hours or so" news agency Reuters quoted Harris at a UN press briefing in Geneva.

  • One of the two vaccines made in India (along with Covishield), Covaxin had submitted Expression of Interest (EOI) to WHO in April for the vaccine's Emergency Use Listing (EUL).

The vaccine has been developed by Hyderabad based pharmaceutical company, Bharat Biotech. Millions of Indians have taken Covaxin but many have been unable to travel due to the pending of it's approval from WHO.
