Imran Khan gets 3-year prison sentence in Toshakhana corruption case

On Saturday, a court in Pakistan sentenced former prime minister Imran Khan to three years in prison in a corruption case, accused of profiting from selling expensive state gifts during his time in power.

In addition, Khan was fined Rs 100,000 by Additional Judge Humayun Dilawar of the Islamabad-based district and sessions judge, warning him that failure to pay the fine would result in an additional six months of imprisonment.

He has been found guilty in the Toshakhana case, which was filed last year based on a complaint from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). Notably, the ECP had previously disqualified him in connection with the same case. The verdict was issued shortly after the Islamabad High Court (IHC) overturned a session court's ruling, allowing the Toshakhana case to proceed as a criminal proceeding against Khan.

The Toshakhana case, involving the sale of state gifts received by the former cricketer-turned-politician, became a significant national political matter. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) disqualified Khan on 21 October 2022, citing "false statements and incorrect declaration" related to the issue.

The Toshakhana is a department under the Cabinet Division responsible for storing gifts given to rulers and government officials by foreign dignitaries. Khan purchased some of these gifts, including a valuable watch, and later sold them for personal gain.
