In a major jolt to the entire music industry, renowned singer Ustad Rashid Khan has passed away after a prolonged battle with prostate cancer. Following a cerebral attack in December, the 55-year-old musician as on oxygen and ventilation in the ICU of a Kolkata hospital.
Wes Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee post her visit to the hospital, said:
This is a great loss for the entire country and the entire music fraternity. I am in a lot of pain as I still can't believe that Rashid Khan is no more.
Belonging to the 'Rampur-Sahaswan Gharana,' Khan received his initial training from maestros like Ustad Nissar Hussain Khan and Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan. Making his debut concert at 11, he gained recognition as a musician at the ITC Sangeet Research Academy by the age of 26.
Born in 1968 in Badayun, Uttar Pradesh, Khan, the great-grandson of gharana founder Inayat Hussain Khan, commenced his training early. Recognized as a '31st generation descendant of Mian Tansen' on his official website, he earned accolades such as the Padma Shri, Banga Bhushan, and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. The Padma Bhushan was conferred upon him in 2022.
