On Monday, 1st January 2024, the Shree Jagannath Temple administration enforced a dress code for devotees, prohibiting entry to the 12th century shrine for those not adhering to the specified attire.
The dress code mandates "decent clothes," prohibiting half pants, shorts, torn jeans, skirts, and sleeveless dresses. As a result, on the first day of 2024, male devotees were seen in dhoti and towels, while women opted for sarees or salwar kameez.
Additionally, the use/consumption of gutkha, pan, plastic, and polythene has been strictly banned within the temple premises. Devotees violating these rules are subject to fines. To maintain sanctity, the ban on gutkha and pan is rigorously enforced, with penalties for violations.
Devotees have flocked to the temple in large numbers for a darshan of Lord Jagannath, with elaborate arrangements for smooth darshan by the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) and police.
Similar restrictions on pan and tobacco consumption, as well as the use of plastic, have been implemented at the 11th century Lingaraj Temple in Bhubaneswar by the Lingaraj Temple Trust Board.
