On Monday a three Storey Building Collapsed in Bhiwandi, 50 km away from the City of Mumbai. It is reported that atleast 16 people, including 8 children have been killed in this accident.
As many as 20 People have been pulled out from under the debris by rescue workers. The officials now believe that there are still 25-30 more people trapped under the debris.
Pankaj Aashiya, the Commissioner of Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporation has said that the rescue operation is likely to continue on Tuesday and back up teams have been called from Mumbai and Pune.
The Civic body has said that the building was structurally unstable and that notices have been sent to residents to vacate the place as it was unsafe but they refused to do so.
Pankaj Aashiya said " The Whole Structure is illegal. We have learnt the original structure of ground-plus one floor was constructed as a powerloom in the 1980's when a Gram Panchayat governed the area. However the other 2 areas were constructed around 12 years ago after the corporation was created and we have learnt the builder did not take any permission."
The Civic Body says that the last time they sent a notice to vacate the building was in February but as many people were living there for low rents, they decided not to leave the homes.
