Man Faked as IPS Officer arrested; Police chased him over 1,600 Kms.

 


The Mumbai Police Crime Branch on Wednesday Arrested a 38 Year Old Man after chasing him over for more than 1,600 Km as he was posing as an IPS officer and kidnapping and extorting Rs 16 Lakh from a Surat based Businessman.

The Accused Identified as Shiv Shankar Sharma(38) along with his four associates had told the businessman that the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) had registered a case against him and him his help by trying to "settle" the matter. The police are yet to arrest the other four accused.

The Complainant Muhammad Naviwala who is a garment trader from Surat was approached by one of Sharma's colleagues and told him that a complain has been registered against him and that he knows a IPS officer who can help him why "settling" the matter in Mumbai. After this the complainant followed him to Mumbai on September 28, the police said.

An officer from Anti-Extortion Cell (AEC) said that "They waited for the IPS officer at a room of a 4 star hotel in South Mumbai. Sharma allegedly showed up with three other associates posing as his subordinates, and offered to resolve the case for a hefty fees".

After he declined the sum of money, Sharma and his associates held him for few hours. Later he was kidnapped at gunpoint and took him to Gujarat. He was then released on September 29 after he payed them 16 Lakh rupees.

The trader then launched a complain against them in Gujarat but the officers there said that the crime took place in Mumbai and that's why he should complain in Mumbai. He then launched a complain in Marine Drive police station and submitted a complaint.

After chasing him for a overnight for around 1,600 Km the police were successful in catching him in Bengaluru on October 7.

He is now registered under a case of IPC Section 170(impersonating a public servant), 120(B) (Criminal Conspiracy), 342(Wrongful Confinement), 364(A)(Kidnapping for Ransom), 386(Extortion by putting a person in fear of hurt), 504(Abuse) and section 3 and 25 of Arms Act.
