UCL MatchDay 2 Roundup

Marcus Rashford with the Matchball

Some Elite Names won, some lost in MatchDay 1 as Holders Bayern crushed Atletico Madrid, Man City, Liverpool, Barcelona won comfortably while the likes of Man United had to work hard, some names like Real Madrid and Paris Saint Germain suffered defeats. But that was all in history books, as MatchDay 2 rounded up this midweek.

The key fixture of MatchDay 2 was the Group G fixture of Juventus vs FC Barcelona, the repeat of the 2015-16 Champions League Final. What made it more interesting was fans thought they would see the reunion of the Rivarlry of two of the greats Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi as they looked to face each other for the first time, since Ronaldo's departure from Real Madrid in 2018.

But fans had to come face to face with harsh reality when they found that Cristiano Ronaldo was tested positive for Covid-19 and would miss the match. It turned out to a big blow for the Old Lady as they have seemed to struggle without him in key matches.

FC Barcelona had tension of their own off the fields. The club announced on Wednesday that club president Joseph Maria Bartomeu had resigned along with his directors team.

Barcelona took the lead inside 14 minutes through Osumane Dembele through a wicked deflection that went into the top left corner.

After being already disallowed twice for offside, Alvaro Morata thought he has finally equalised in the 55th minute. But the VAR decided that he was offside again and his goal was ruled out for a third time in the night. The game then turned in Barca's favour after Merih Demiral was shown a second yellow in the 85th minute for a foul on former Juventus player Pjanic.

Lionel Messi then settled the game through a stoppage time penalty to make it 2-0 for the Spanish Outfit in Italy as they took all three points and handed manager Andre Pirlo his first defeat as Juve's manager.

It was another delight for Manchester United, this time at home as they thrashed RB Leipzig 5-0 at Old Trafford. A first half goal from Mason Greenwood had given them the lead. They scored 4 times in the last 16 minutes through a penalty by Anthony Martial in the 87th minute and through a Hattrick from Marcus Rashford (74th,78th and 90+2nd minute). What made this Hattrick special was that Rashford scored this as a substitute. He came on the match in the 63rd minute replacing Greenwood. He become only the second Manchester United Player to score a Hattrick as a sub, after his current manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær's had done so in February 1999 against Nottingham Forrest.
