| A Standard Double Decker Bus |
The Metropolitan City of Mumbai will soon be deployed over more than 100 Double Deckers BEST(Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport) buses with upgraded equipments and advance features.
According to Sources, the new double decker buses will have a capacity of 70 passengers(sitting) and will be operated on automated manual transmission. The new buses will have 2-door entrances (front and rear door) with pneumatic door closers and two staircases for smooth travelling rather than than normal one it has now.
Emergency Exit door on the backside will be equipped with CCTV Cameras and the buses will have an inter Communication system that will help the driver and the conductor to communicate from either deck. These buses will be used majorly for long distance routes.
BEST Double Decker buses were first introduced in 1937. Around 1978-79 it gained a huge popularity among commuters and tourist and became a major attraction. Till 1993 there were around 882 buses. At present however there are only 120 Double Decker buses in a fleet of 3,500 buses that are being operated on 7 routes.
In 2018, the BEST Administration had decided to scrap them as they require more Maintenance than a standard single decker bus. However this raised many objections and the Community came up with this idea. 2021 is the given time by BEST officals for the arrival of this new buses.
