Legendary Shyam Benegal passes away at 90

Legendary filmmaker Shyam Benegal, a pioneer of Indian cinema, passed away on December 23 at 6:30 pm at the age of 90. Renowned for classics like Manthan, Zubeidaa, and Sardari Begum, Benegal had reportedly been battling kidney-related issues. The news was confirmed by his daughter, Pia Benegal.

Born on 14 December 1934, in Hyderabad, Benegal hailed from a Konkani-speaking Chitrapur Saraswat Brahmin family. Inspired by his photographer father, Sridhar B. Benegal, he made his first film at the age of 12 with a gifted camera. A Master’s in Economics graduate from Osmania University, he founded the Hyderabad Film Society, marking the start of his cinematic journey.

Honoured with the Padma Shri (1976) and Padma Bhushan (1991), Benegal celebrated his 90th birthday on December 14 with family and industry icons like Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi, Divya Dutta, and Kunal Kapoor. His illustrious career includes masterpieces such as Ankur, Mandi, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose: The Forgotten Hero, and Well Done Abba.
