The Mumbai Police has arrested Assistant Dean of Sion Medical College Rakesh Verma for allegedly Duping a MBBS Women Doctor of Rs 50 lakh in the pretext of getting her a post graduate seat in the medical college.
The women Alisha Sheikh who originally is from Andhra Pradesh wanted an admission in Medicine course at Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College for which she meet Verma in August.
In the meeting Verma demanded a sum of Rs 50 lakh to guarantee her a seat. The complainant would then transfer a sum of Rs 21 Lakh from her father's account and promised to pay the remaining sum after few times.
When Verma failed to fulfill his side of the deal,the women then approached the Sion Police Station and launched a FIR against him.
Verma was then later picked up from his Doctor's Quarter at Nair Hospital in Mumbai Central and was brought to the Police Station for enquiry.
During interrogation he admitted that he had asked a sum of 50 lakh. Additional Municipal Commissioner Suresh Kakani said that Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had approached Mumbai Police three months ago to initiate an enquiry against Rakesh Verma.
"We had received a complaint that he was extorting money on a pretext of providing a medical seat to students. When the police couldn't find any evidence against him,we ordered indefinite suspension last month" said Kakani.
Officials said they suspect Verma may have taken money from several students in the same pretext.
