The Group Stage of the UEFA Champions League 2020-21 came to an end last night with the remaining 4 teams go through with the inclusion of Real Madrid, who needed a win for ensure qualification from the Group Stages.
After Losing to Shakhtar Donetsk last week, the Los Blancos were left hanging and were facing a potential exit from the competition. To overcome that, they needed to beat Borussia Monchengladbach to take the top spot from them and progress through.
Real Madrid last night's performance against Gladbach silenced the critics, once again proving Form is Temporary,Class is permanent as they Defeated Gladbach 2-0 at home thanks to a first half brace from their talisman Karim Benzema.
His first goal came in the 9th minute after he nodded home the ball in the top left corner from Lucas Vasquez's cross to give Madrid the perfect start. His second came in the 31st minute after he steered his shot from Close range. Real hit the post twice in the game and had a goal disallowed but it didn't matter in the end as they comfortably won the game and topped the group. Gladbach skimmed downed to second but are safely through after Shakhtar Donetsk and Inter Milan played out a 0-0 draw,meaning the Ukraine club go through the Europa League at third with Inter's European Run coming to an end.
Like Real,City Rivals Atletico Madrid were struggling to qualify. Coming into MatchDay 6, Atletico were second, 2 points ahead of their opponents Salzburg knowing a point would be enough for them to go through.
In the end they didn't took any chances and 2 goals,one from Hermoso in the 39th minute and one from Carrasco in the 86th minute helped them to a comfortable 2-0 win in Austria. Elsewhere Bayern Munchen won 2-0 against Lokomotiv Moscow and finished the group unbeaten for the second year running.
In Group C, Manchester City and Porto had already qualified for the knockout phase and won their respective matches by 3-0 and 2-0 scoreline respectively against Marseille and Olympiacos. Like Bayern, City also finished the group unbeaten.
The final spot went to Atalanta when they Defeated Ajax in Netherlands to go through for a second year running. Ajax dropped down to third with that Result and will now compete in the Europa League.
