Manchester United 3-2 Liverpool; United eliminate arch rivals Liverpool from the FA Cup

 

Just a week after the two most successful clubs in English Football played out a monotonous goalless draw at Anfield, they meet again on Sunday as Manchester United welcomed Liverpool at Old Trafford for the Fourth Round FA Cup tie.

History in the FA Cup was on United's side. They had not lost a game at home against Liverpool in the FA Cup since 1921. They lost a replay against the Reds over 100 years ago and came into this match in a much better form than the visitors. United currently sit 6 points ahead of Liverpool as the dream for Title number 21 is beginning to pop in United's faithful.

This time unlike last Sunday, the game lived up to its high expectations as fans were treated a 5 goal thriller. Manchester United would make an emphatic statement as they Defeated Liverpool 3-2 despite being behind early on and knocked their rivals out of the competition.

Mohammed Salah gave Liverpool the lead in the 18th minute and ended their goal scoring drought after he delighted chipped the ball over the outrushing Dean Henderson to make it 1-0.

The lead however didn't last long as Marcus Rashford played out a superb long pass which found its way to teenager Mason Greenwood who took a touch and then slotted it past Alisson to make it 1-1 in the 26th minute.

Greenwood would then return the favor to Rashford after playing him through. Defender Rhys William was unable to clear the ball properly and allowed Rashford to go one on one with Alisson. The England International made no mistake and made it 2-1 and Complete the turn around in the 48th minutes.

Moments after it looked it Liverpool Captain James Milner had missed a great chance from 5 yards out,United lost the ball and Liverpool got the ball back quickly and Milner's dummy run allowed Mohammed Salah to score his second of the night to make it 2-2 in the 58th minute. 

Salah had other chances too to grab a third and Complete his Hattrick but was denied by Dean Henderson. The Game Changer came from the bench. Bruno Fernandes was surprisingly dropped from the 11 and the Portuguese was clearly not happy after been withdrawn from the game last Sunday.

He slammed in a smart free kick from 22 yards out in the 78th minute to give United the lead once again and grab the headlines. United had chances to add a fourth but were unable to do so. Edinson Cavani came close but his header was denied by the post.
