Yerwada Jail to become a Tourist spot from 26th January,2021

 

In a surprising decision,Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh announced that the government will soon begin the tourism of jails,beginning with the famous Yerwada Jail from January 26th,2021.

He announced this decision while giving a press conference in Nagpur. In the address he has mentioned that Chief Minister Udhaav Thackeray and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar will inaugrate this Jail Tourism facility.

Deshmukh said "in the first phase, jail tourism will be started in Yerwada Prison whereas it will begin in Nagpur Central Jail in the second phase. We shall levy a small fee,Rs 5 for school students,Rs 10 for collegians and Rs 50 for general tourists."

Yerwada Prison facility has a huge reputation. Based in Pune it is one of the largest prisons not only in Maharashtra but South Asia as well.

The likes of Indian Freedom Fighters including Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and Mahatama Gandhi have also been imprisoned here. In 1998 Social worker Anna Hazare was also imprisoned here. It has also housed famous Bollywood Celebrities most recently Sanjay Dutt. This was aslo the place were 26/11 attacker, Terrorist Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab was hanged.
