Today on Wednesday 24th February,2021 just before the third test match(Day/Night Test) between India and England in Ahmedabad, President Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated the world's largest cricket arena, the reinvented Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium. The other important thing is that this Stadium will now be known as the Narendra Modi Stadium renamed after Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In his speech after the inauguration, President Kovind said "The Stadium was conceptualised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat. He was also the President of the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) at that time." He would also highlight that this Stadium is an perfect example of eco-friendly development.
During the inauguration ceremony, among the big names of dignitaries, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju were also present.
Shah revealed that the reason behind the renaming of the stadium in honour of the current PM Modi was done because this Stadium was his "dream project."
The Stadium can accommodate up to around 1,32,000 fans at full capacity. It has been spread at around 63 acres and have costed Rs 800 Crore for it's reconstruction. It has now surpassed the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) which can accommodate 90,000 fans.
BCCI President Sourav Ganguly expressed his congratulations to everyone involved with GCA and gave best wishes to India for it's match against England today.
