On Thursday the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) have arrested an Assistant Commissioner and Superintendent of customs department in Mumbai in allegations of bribery.
According to the CBI, a private company fr Kolhapur, Maharashtra had alleged purchased 74 kgs of silver from a private company in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Of the 74 kgs ordered, around 60 kg of silver was transported from Gujarat to Maharashtra the very next day in two packages.
On its way to Mumbai, the parcel was allegedly seized by Mumbai Customs on the pretext that proper procedures for transportation had not been followed by the Kolhapur based company.
Following this the company's representative attended the meeting at the New Customs House in Mumbai in which Superintendent Niraj Singh was present. He then took the case to an assistant named A P Bandekar. The CBI officer then added that the Singh and Bandekar demanded a bribe of Rs 19 Lakh for the release of the silver which was seized.
After this the company approached the CBI. The agency then laid out a trap and caught the superintendent Singh, red handedly accepting a bribe of Rs 2 lakh. Later the assistant Bandekar was also caught up.
The two of them have been formally arrested and have been remanded in police custody till February 27.
