Remembering Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru on Shaheed Diwas

On the occasion of the 'Shaheed Diwas' (Martyrs Day), Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid his tribute to freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru and said that thier sacrifice will always remain and serve as inspiration for every generation of the country.

The Shaheed Diwas is observed on many different occasions in India especially on March 23 and January 30(M.K. Gandhi's death anniversary).

On March 23,1931 the trio of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru were hanged to death in the Lahore Jail (current day Pakistan) for killing British officer J P Saunders whom they had mistaken as the British Police Superintendent James Scott. The trio wanted to avenge the death of Lala Lajpat Rai, who died after succumbing that he got during the 'Lathi Charge' which they thought was ordered by Scott.

Singh would go on to publicly announce the avenge of Rajput's death. He would then go into hiding for several months. Along with his associate Batukeshwar Dutt, he resurfaced in 1929 and set up two explosive devices in the Central Legislative Assembly in Delhi and allowed themselves to be arrested. During their arrest they shouted the famous slogan "Inquilab Zindabad" or "Long Live the Revolution".

During his time at prison, Bhagat Singh would go on to protest for the better living of inmates. Due to this he would gain sympathy from the public especially when he joined a hunger strike with fellow defender Jatin Das. The strike however ended with Das's death due to starvation in September 1929.

Former President Jawaharlal Nehru words on Bhagat Singh sums up the reason why Singh will always be considered a national hero and remain immortal.

Nehru in his book wrote "Bhagat Singh did not become popular because of his act of terrorism, but because he seemed to vindicate, for the moment, the honour of Lala Lajpat Rai and through him of the nation. He became a symbol; the act was forgotten, the symbol remained and within a few months each town and the village of Punjab, and to a lesser extent in the rest of Northern India, resounded with his name."

We at the Su-Niti News bow down our heads and salute these brave heroes, who fought for our country and try to replicate their heroics in our own way. Jai Hind!
