Rescue ops underway as Mumbai monorail services disrupted

Mumbai monorail services were disrupted for over 2 hours on Tuesday evening due to heavy rainfall, leaving more than 200 passengers stranded between Chembur and Bhakti Park from 6.15 pm. However, after hours of rescue operations, 106 were safely rescued and 100 passengers still stranded.

Passengers contacted the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s helpline 1916, prompting fire brigade officials to start rescue operations using three snorkel vehicles.

The Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation said:

One Monorail train near Mysore Colony station has experienced a minor power supply issue. Our operations and maintenance teams are already on-site and working to resolve it quickly. Services between Wadala and Chembur are running smoothly on a single line. We sincerely thank you for your patience and assure you that your safety remains our top priority.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said an inquiry will be conducted and assured that stranded passengers are being safely evacuated on priority.

Fadnavis said:

Due to some technical reason, a monorail is stuck between Chembur and Bhakti Park. MMRDA, the fire brigade, and the municipal corporation, all agencies have reached the spot. The highest priority is being given to the safety of all passengers. Therefore, no one should worry or panic. All passengers will be safely evacuated. I request everyone to remain patient. I am in contact with the MMRDA Commissioner, the Municipal Commissioner, the police, and all relevant agencies. An enquiry will also be conducted into why this incident occurred.

A train near Mysore Colony station remained stuck for nearly two hours after a power supply issue, with attempts to tow the four-coach train failing due to jammed brakes. Four buses were deployed to take passengers home once rescued.
