Sunday Special: Dev Anand's Hum Dono(1961)

On this edition of Su-Niti News's Sunday Special, we take you back and recommend to watch the 1961 Dev Anand starrer Hum Dono(Both of Us). Though Amarjeet is credited for as the director of the film, Dev Anand claimed that it was his brother Vijay Anand who directed and produced the film alongside him.

The movie stars Dev Anand in a double role. He was joined in the cast by Sadhana and Nanda. This movie is mainly now for it's music and lyrics by Jaidev and Sahir Ludhianvi. Released on 6th February,1961 a colour version of this movie was released exactly 50 years later on 6th February,2011. 

The soundtrack of this movie includes the legendary hits like "Abhi Na Jao Chhodkar", "Adhuri Ass Chod Ke", "Allah Tero Naam Ishwar Tero Naam", "Mai Zindagi Ka Saath Nibhata Chala Gaya"etc.

                               Brief Synopsis-

The film is setted in India during the time of World War II. Anand(Dev Anand) is an unemployed but a happy go lucky man who falls in love with Meeta (Sadhana) a rich girl. When Meeta informs her father about Anand and invites him to talk to him(her father), Anand faces a tough situation where he has an interview to attend. Upon meeting Meeta father, Anand is insulted for not having money to feed Meeta and for turning down the interview to met him. Feeling dejected Anand sees a poster of Indian Army poster and decides to serve the nation.

In the army he befriends Major Verma(also Dev Anand) who looks just like him though he has a moustache and has a wife named Ruma (Nanda). One day it is feared that Verma has disappeared during the war and is dead. The movie then follows Anand trying to satisfy both he families while not telling them the truth and how Verma who was once feared to be death, Returns and makes the situation worse. In the end Anand clears all the confusion as both couples leave happily.
