Election Commission bans victory processions after poll results

In the midst of an unprecedented battle against COVID-19, the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Tuesday has announced a ban on all victory processions on or after vote on May 2. Additionally no more than two persons shall be allowed to accompany the winning candidate while receiving election certificate.

The recent election campaigns in different states especially West Bengal has been judged as one of the key reason in the rise of COVID-19 cases in India. Election rallies, road shows addressed by leaders such as PM Modi,CM Mamata Banerjee, Union Home Minister Amit Shah etc had seen a large gathering of crowds as COVID-19 safety norms were broken.

The EC letter read "No victory possession after the counting on 2.5.2021 shall be permissible. Not more than two persons shall be allowed to accompany the winning candidate or his/her authorized representative receive the certificate of election from the Returning Officer concerned."

The West Bengal Elections results are set to be announced on May 2.
