Mumbai: Tree collapses on school bus in Chembur, 10 children injured, one dead

One student has died and 10 students were severely injured after a large tree fell on a school bus carrying students in Mumbai's Chembur area on Road number 11 on June 30, 2026 causing significant structural damage. The accident took place around 2:50 pm when a tree collapsed onto a bus belonging to Universal School, Tilak Nagar. Emergency response teams including fire brigade personnel and police rushed to the scene immediately upon receiving distress calls

According to DCP Sameer Shaikh, Zone 6, the victim, identified as Vihan Shrivastav, was declared brought dead at the hospital. Twelve of the 18 students were evacuated from the bus, while five others were admitted to Zen Hospital for treatment. Out of them, the condition of four children, who suffered minor injuries, is stable, while the fifth student is critically injured and undergoing treatment.

Video footage from the site shows the yellow bus severely crushed under the fallen tree, with rescue operations in full progress to extract trapped passengers and provide emergency medical aid. The incident occurred amid heavy rainfall in the city, which typically weakens tree root systems and increases the risk of such accidents during the monsoon season.

Rescue personnel worked to free at least one student who remained trapped inside the damaged vehicle as of the time of first reports. Residents alleged that they had repeatedly written to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) requesting that the trees be trimmed or cleared, noting that a similar incident had occurred in the area previously. Despite multiple warnings, no action was taken.

Fire brigade rescue personnel, police officers, and municipal emergency response teams coordinated at the scene to clear debris and safely extract trapped passengers. Heavy equipment was deployed to remove sections of the fallen tree and stabilize the bus structure. The response effort required multiple rescue units working in coordination due to the scale of structural damage and the need to access passengers in different sections of the vehicle.
