Sunday Special:- Know, how Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee saved Bengal in 1947

Amid the political turmoil going on in West Bengal between the state's two biggest competitors - BJP & TMC, we present to you in today's Sunday Special, a brief history about how Bengal was saved by Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee.

Note:- This article is not intended to hurt any religious sentiments nor focused/biased towards any political party or person.

During the year 1946, The Amrita Bazar Patrika, a nationalist English daily published from Calcutta, ran a plebiscitary opinion poll among the Hindus of Bengal, where a staggering 98.3 per cent of them opined in favour of partitioning the province (Bengal).

  • After much hardship in April 1947, Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee became successful in influencing the Bengal Legislature to include the major part of Bengal within United India.

Muhammad Ali Jinnah had very clearly said that he would not settle for Bengal, if Calcutta is not given to Pakistan.

The initial plan of demand for Pakistan included entire Bengal & Assam. While the Communists found the demand for Pakistan very much justified, the Congress too was almost ready to gift entire Bengal to Pakistan, ignoring the interests and future of its huge Hindu population.

  • Calcutta (now Kolkata), then the biggest & richest city of India was Jinnah's dream & all Muslims of Bengal were almost convinced that Calcutta would be given to majority community (Muslims in this case), as it is their normal right.

Thanks to Dr. SP Mukherjee, because of whom the capital city of the country was not given away to Jinnah's notoriously planned Pakistan. Bengal then went over to the Bengali Hindus who were a little more than 32% of the total population of undivided Bengal.

In today's era, people of India, mostly the youth, count him as communalist and a propagandist because of two reasons:-

  • Dr. SP Mukherjee had formed the Bharatiya Jana Sangh which later became Bharatiya Janata Party.
  • He saved Hindus from being given away to the hands of death awaiting in Pakistan.

If the entire Bengal had been shifted to Pakistan, the same scenario would have been reiterated that Hindus had to face in last 74 years in Lahore, Karachi & Dhaka — a gradual death and fast vanishing of existence.

Therefore all Indians, especially Hindus must never forget the frontline battling of one of the greatest leader Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee.
