On Sunday, the Mumbai Police arrested a 30 year old labourer for allegedly killing a 54 year old taxi driver after he was refused a ride. The incident is said to have taken place in the early morning of Sunday in Dadar, after the accused, under the influence of alcohol smashed the head of the driver with three paver blocks.
According to the police, the accused identified as Basavaraj Melinamani originally hails from Karnataka and shifted to Mumbai for work. He was residing in the Ambedkar Nagar on Senapati Bapat Marg in Dadar.
Since his home was a short distance away, the taxi driver identified as Chhabiraj Jaiswar refused to give him a ride. Soon a fight broke out between them.
- "During the fight, the taxi driver fell on the footpath; the accused picked up three paver blocks and smashed them against his face" said an investigator.
Melinamani then fled the spot. Around 6:15 am a local resident informed the police control room which then forwarded the information to the Dadar Police Station. The police then rushed to the spot and took the driver to the Sion Hospital where he was declared dead before admission.
Following investigation with the help of CCTV footages, the police were able to apprehend him around 3:30 pm where he soon confessed his crime. He will be produced before the court on Monday.
