Sextortion Racket busted in Mumbai

The Ghatkopar Police in Mumbai have busted a "sextortion" racket, in which businessman would be lured by honey-traps, blackmailed and forced to pay huge amounts of money in the form of extortion. The police have arrested a group of three men with the fourth member now on the run.

The accused have been identified as Sahil Nadar, Ranjit More and Arbaaz Khan, who were arrested from a Hyundai Accent which they used to kidnap a victim from Ghatkopar to Kalyan. The fourth member of the gang identified as Shabnam Divekar went underground after a victim filed a complaint against her.

The gang would befriend businessmen on social media and would persuade them to connect via video call and arrange a meeting later. During the meeting, as soon as they girl would get physical, her three gang members would suddenly barge in the room posing as husband and relatives of her, beat up the victim, threaten a rape case and demand extortion money.

This racket came into light when a businessman filed a complaint against her. The businessman was lured in by Divekar. "Within few days both started chatting and on Sunday decided to meet at a lodge in Ghatkopar, where the victim got physical and clicked selfies."

Once they came down, her three friends showed up and started beating him, showed him those obscene photos and threatened to lodge a rape case.

  • "When the victim got scared, they bundled him into their car and took him to Kalyan where the demanded Rs 1 lakh. The victim transferred Rs 10,000 into their account and promised to send the rest of the money after reaching home. Instead he went to the police" said the police in their statement.
