WhatsApp files case against Indian Government regarding new social media rules

The popular Facebook owned messenger app WhatsApp has filed a complaint against the Indian Government in the Delhi High Court on the day when new rules and guidelines came into effect for Social Media companies.

According to the guidelines, social media companies will need to "trace" the origins of an inflammatory messages sent on the services.

As per WhatsApp this would mean they will have to break the "end-to-end encryption" which they provide in their service. This move according to them "fundamentally undermines people's the right to privacy."

  • "Requiring messaging apps to "trace" chats is the equivalent of asking us to keep a fingerprint of every single message sent on WhatsApp, which would break the end-to-end encryption and fundamentally undermines people's right to privacy. We have consistently joined civil society and experts around the world in opposing requirements that would violate the privacy of our users" said the company.
