Drug lord El Chapo's wife Emma Aispuro pleads guilty to drugs charge

On Thursday, 31-year-old Emma Coronel Aispuro, wife of drug load Joaquin Guzman aka "El Chapo" pleaded guilty to a series of charges after been accused of helping him run his broad empire at a Federal Court in Washington DC.

Emma faced accusations of helping her husband escape from prison in 2015, aid him in managing the drug cartel and conspired to distribute illegal drugs. The 31-year-old is now likely to face life imprisonment.

She has also pleaded guilty of charges of money laundering and engaging in financial dealings for the drug cartel. The Judge has set a tentative sentencing date of 15 September.

She was arrested in February on allegations of relaying messages to help Guzman traffic drugs between 2012 and 2014 and continued to deliver messages to him after his arrest in 2014.

In July of 2015, Guzman would escape from a federal prison in Mexico through a tunnel. He had previously escaped in 2001 from another Mexican prison with the help of a maintenance worker.

In 2019 Guzman (64) was convicted for masterminding the drug empire and was sentenced to life plus 30 year imprisonment and is currently being held in the supermax prison in Colorado.
