August 14 to be observed as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day says PM Narendra Modi

On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that, August 14 will now be observed as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day in the memory of the struggles, the horrors and the sacrifices faced during the partition of India in 1947.

PM Modi said that the pain of the partition cannot be forgotten. The Partition of India was the division of British India into two separate independent dominions (India and Pakistan). The partition of India resulted in large scale violence which resulted in the deaths of atleast 200,000 to 2 million people. Around 10-20 million people were displaced.

The violent nature of the partition created an atmosphere of hostility between the two countries which continues to affect their relationship till this day.

In a tweet, PM Modi announced "Partition's pain can never be forgotten. Millions of our brothers and sisters were displaced and many lost their lives due to mindless hate and violence. In memory of the struggles and sacrifices of our people, 14th August will be observed as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day."

Sunday 15th August will mark India's 75th Independence Day.
