Samajwadi Party MP and two others booked for sedition over comments supporting Taliban

In 2019, Barg refused to say "Vande Mataram" during the oath taking ceremony

On Tuesday, a FIR for sedition was filed against a Samajwadi Party MP, Shafiqur Rahman Barg and two others by the Uttar Pradesh Police over alleged remarks that compare the Taliban to Indian's freedom fighters.

"It was complained that MP Shafiqur Rahman Barg compared Taliban to India's freedom fighters. Such statements qualify as sedition. So FIR registered against him under sections 124A (sedition), 153A and 295 IPC. Two others said similar things in an FB video, they've also been booked " said the UP Police in a video statement.

Reacting to this development Barg, later told the mediapersons that his statement was misinterpreted and he supports the government policies.

"I didn't make any such statement (comparing Taliban with Indian Freedom Fighters). My statement has been misinterpreted. I'm a citizen of India and not Afghanistan, so I've no business with what is happening there. I support my govt's policies" said Barg.

CM Yogi Adityanath also slammed him in the state legislative council regarding this issue.

"He was shamelessly supporting the Taliban. It means supporting their barbaric act. We are a parliamentary democracy. Where are we heading? We are supporting people who are a blot on Humanity" said CM Yogi Adityanath while slamming the opposition leader.
