Sunday Special : Significance of RakshaBandhan in Indian National Movement

Every Indian knows what RakshaBandhan is all about and why it is celebrated. But most of us have forgotten a significant moment of history when this auspicious occassion led to winning a battle against a British Policy.

Let us look at the event from the past in Su-Niti News's Sunday Special:

Over the century, Bengal being the capital of British India has always proven to have great spirit of humanity, warm heart and welcoming nature. Its land had given birth to uncountable number of Freedom Fighters and Social Reformers.

When the British Viceroy Lord Curzon tried to apply the Divide & Rule policy on Indians, Nobel laureate Gurudeb Rabindranath Tagore started a mass Raksha Bandhan festival during the Partition of Bengal (1905) in which he encouraged people of all religion, irrespective of their age and gender to tie a rakhi which acted as a symbol of unity.

This also gave rise to the Banga Bhanga Andolan by Sir Surendranath Banerjee. Patriotic songs too played a great role in defeating the British. Therefore we salute and remember this day not just as a bond between brothers & sisters but as a symbol of strength among all Indians.
