On Thursday 5th August,2021 India's Tokyo Olympic Medal tally reached up to five as the Men Hockey team came back from 3-1 down to win 5-4 against Germany in the bronze medal match. Later wrestler, Ravi Kumar Dahiya snatched the silver medal in 57 kg freestyle wrestling.
- Having suffered a heartbreaking semi final loss to Belgium, India ended a 41 year wait for an Olympic medal in Hockey as they defeated Germany in a 9 goal thriller.
India conceded a goal early on but found their way back on level terms in the 17th minute through Simranjeet Singh. The Germans however came roaring back and scored twice within quick succession to give them a 3-1 lead.
Hardik Singh and Harmanpreet Singh found the back of the net inside the second quarter itself to level up it 3-3.
In the third quarter, Rupinder Pal Singh made no mistake as he converted his penalty stroke to make it 4-3 to India. Simranjeet Singh scored again to make it 5-3 going in to the final quarter.
Germany created many chances through penalty corners and found one back to make it 5-4 and spice up the game. A late comeback for Germany was denied as brillant defending from India saw them emerge winners and end their drought.
- Whereas in Wrestling, Ravi Kumar Dahiya made the nation proud as he grabbed the silver medal in 57kg freestyle wrestling despite losing in the finals.
The 23-year-old Indian faced off against Russian Olympic Committee's (ROC) Zavur Uguev in the finals. After a tense start which saw both of them defending well, Uguev scored the first two points to go 2-0 up.
Dahiya made a good comeback to make it 2-2 but the ROC wrestler immediately went into advantage as he took two points to go 4-2 up. The score remained 4-2 at the break.
Uguev pushed the Indian out again in the second period to go 5-2 up and soon found himself in a commanding position to go 7-2 up and defended well. Dahiya did score to more points to take the score up to 7-4 but had to settle for a silver medal.
