ACP caught red-handed while accepting bribe of Rs 40,000 in Mumbai

On Friday night, an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Sujata Patil of Mumbai Police was caught red-handed by the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) accepting a bribe of Rs 40,000 in a trap laid out by a private person.

As per ACB officials, she was caught red-handed and has been booked under sections of Prevention of Corruption Act. She has not been arrested as the trap was late on Friday. As per the Supreme Court Guidelines, no woman can be arrested after sunset and before sunrise.

  • In his complaint, the complainant has said that he owns a 220 square feet shop in Jogeshwari. The shop was on rent and as per his orders, a woman tenant vacated it on October 5. However the next day, the woman with the help of others broke the lock and occupied the shop again.

To solve this matter, the complainant allegedly approached Meghwadi Police Station but they refused to act on his complaint. He then approached Patil, who is the ACP of that division.

"Instead of helping him, Patil on October 6 demanded Rs 1 lakh. The officer promised that she will instruct the police station to act on his complaint. She also said that the woman, who has occupied his shop, will not trouble him again in the future" said an ACB official.

The complainant also paid Rs 10,000 as a part of the installment on October 6.

Unwilling to pay her any further, the complainant approached the ACB Headquarters on Thursday and submitted an application, following which the trap was laid on Friday.

"As per Supreme Court guidelines, we cannot arrest a woman after sunset. So, we have served her a notice and allowed her to go home. Our staff is with her and will get her to the ACB office on Saturday morning, after which she will be arrested" added the official.
