BMC postpones reopening of schools in Mumbai to December 15 amid Omicron fear

In the midst of growing fear of "Omicron" variant, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have postponed the reopening of schools for classes 1 to 7 to December 15. Schools were previously scheduled to reopen from tomorrow i.e December 1.

"We are taking cautious approach regarding reopening of schools for Classes 1 to 7. WHO has designated it as a variant of concern and the BMCs health department is also on high alert. There are 12 countries as 'at risk' where the new variant has been detected. Keeping this development in mind, we have postponed the reopening of school by 15 days" said an official.

The Omicron variant which was first detected in Botswana has been declared as a variant of concern by the World Health Organization (WHO).
