In a tragic incident, seven people were killed while atleast 28 others were left injured after a fire broke out on the 18th floor of a 20-storey Kamala building near Mumbai's Bhatia Hospital in Tardeo on Saturday morning.
The blaze has been reported to have erupted around 7.30 am. As many as 21 fire tenders were involved in the firefighting operation.
The Mumbai Fire Brigade labelled it as a Level 3 (major) fire.
Out of the wounded, seven were shifted to Nair Hospital. Two were unfortunately declared dead on the arrival while three others later succumbed to their injuries.
Fifteen injured were admitted to the nearby Bhatia Hospital, three of whom were in critical condition. Others were shifted to the Kasturba hospital, of whom one died later.
The Maharashtra Government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh for the next of kin of those who lost their lives. The state will also bear the cost of medical treatment of the injured.
Meanwhile the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) also promised compensation to the families of the victims and the wounded.
"An ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of those who have lost their lives due to the building fire in Tardeo, Mumbai. The injured will be given Rs 50,000 each," a tweet from PMO read.
