Demanding the safety, social security and financial assistance of journalists, the Working Journalists of India (WJI), affiliated with Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh submitted a memorandum to the Central government on 12 February.
WJI has also announced to hold a grand demonstration at Delhi's Jantar Mantar on March 30 inorder to draw the centre's attention towards journalists' demands.
The memorandum consisting of 30-point demands has been sent to the Prime Minister's Office, to the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Union Ministry of State for Labour & Employment.
Several dignitaries such as WJI's National General Secretary Narendra Bhandari, National Vice President Sanjay Upadhyay, Treasurer Narendra Dhawan, among others, were present in the meeting wherein they raised concerns over problems faced by freelance journalists (including photo & video journalists).
Demanding the withdrawal of PIB's (under Ministry of Information and Broadcasting) new guidelines for recognition of journalists, Shri Narendra Bhandari has also sought for the immediate dissolution of the new Central Press Accreditation Committee.
He said that as per new guidelines only journalists of big media houses and foreign media will be given recognition. Similarly, the guidelines which have been made to give recognition to the journalists of digital media are quite surprising and worrisome.
