Roman Abramovich |
On Thursday, the United Kingdom government imposed new sanctions on Russian businessmen and freezed their assets including Roman Abramovich, owner of London-based Chelsea Football Club.
The others who are included in this list are Igor Sechin, Oleg Deripaska and Dmitri Lebedev.
"There can be no safe havens for those who have supported Putin's invasion. Today's sanctions are the latest step in our ruthless pursuit of those who enable the killing of civilians, destruction of hospitals and illegal operation of Ukraine," UK PM Boris Johnson tweeted.
Following the sanctions placed upon Abramovich, he can no longer sell the club. The club can however still be sold provided the sales do not benefit Abramovich or the Russian Federation.
- The club will be allowed to play but won't be allowed to sell tickets, merchandise or transfer players. (Season Ticket Holders will be allowed to attend matches at Stamford Bridge).
This ban comes on a day when the club celebrates their 117th anniversary of foundation since being found on March 10, 1905.
Abramovich bought Chelsea in 2003, sparking a period of unprecedented success and spending for the club which saw Chelsea win five league titles, two Europa league titles and two Champions league trophies.
