Asian Games 2022 postponed due to COVID-19 outbreak in China

The 19th Asian Games which was scheduled to take place during September 2022 in Hangzhou, China, on Friday was postponed due to the latest COVID-19 outbreak which has led to a lockdown in the country.

The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) officials met on Friday for discussing the situation and felt postponing the games as the best decision under the given circumstances.

"Following a detailed discussion with the Chinese Olympic Committee (COC) and the Hangzhou Asian Games Organising Committee (HAGOC), the OCA Executive Board (EB) today decided to postpone the 19th Asian Games, which were scheduled to be held in Hangzhou, China, from 10th to 25th September 2022," the OCA said in a statement.

The new dates regarding the event will be released in the near future.

"The new dates of the 19th Asian Games will be agreed between the OCA, the COC and the HAGOC and announce in the near future," the statement added.

Around 11,000 athletes are said to compete in 61 games at the event.
