On Tuesday, Former Union Minister Yashwant Sinha was selected as the joint Opposition candidate for the upcoming presidential polls. He will file the nomination papers on June 27.
Opposition leaders, who gathered at a Parliament annexe meeting led by NCP Chief Sharad Pawar agreed on Sinha's name. The parties that attended the meeting included the Congress, TMC, NCP, CPI, CPI-M, Samajwadi Party, National Conference, AIMIM, RJD and AIUDF.
"I am grateful to Mamataji for the honour and prestige she bestowed on me in the TMC. Now a time has come when for a larger national cause, I must step aside from the party to work for greater opposition unity," Sinha tweeted.
The polls will be held on July 18 with the result being declared on July 21. The counting of the votes will take place in Delhi.
