Kaali poster row: FIRs filed in UP & Delhi against filmmaker Leena Manimekalai for hurting religious sentiments

On Tuesday, FIRs were filed by the Uttar Pradesh Police and Delhi Police's Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) wing against filmmaker Leena Manimekalai for hurting religious sentiments with the depiction of Goddess Kaali in her movie "Kaali".

According to the UP Police, she has been booked on charges of criminal conspiracy, offence in place of worship, deliberately hurting religious sentiments and intention to provoke breach of peace.

As per the Delhi Police, two complaints were received against her. The IFSO, has filed an FIR under Section 153A and 295A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). On the second complaint, the police said that a probe is underway and necessary action will be taken as per the law.

"Kaali's poster went viral yesterday; it was objectionable & was hurting religious sentiments of a particular community. Upon its complaint, an FIR u/s 153A and 295A IPC has been registered against the director; investigation is in progress," Suman Nawal, PRO, Delhi Police was quoted by ANI.

The poster has lead to a massive outrage on social media with the hashtag "Arrest Leena Manimekalai". Meanwhile she has said that she will continue to use her voice fearlessly until she is alive.

"I have nothing to lose. Till the time I live, I wish to live with a voice that speaks what I believe without fear. If the price for that is my life, it can be given," Manimekalai wrote in Tamil in a Twitter post in response to the attacks.
