On Monday, the Supreme Court sentenced fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya to four months of imprisonment. He was found guilty of contempt of court in 2017 for withholding information from court.
- The court also directed Mallya to deposit back 40 million USD with interest within four weeks and failure to do so would lead to attachment of properties.
A bench of Justice UU Lalit, PS Narasimha and Ravindra Bhat also imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 on Mallya while observing that he showed "no remorse" for his conduct and did not appear before it during the sentence hearing.
Mallya is an accused in a bank loan default case of over Rs 9,000 crore involving is defunct Kingfisher Airlines. He is currently present in the United Kingdom.
