On Monday (local time), US President Joe Biden confirmed that Al-Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri was killed on Saturday in an air strike by the United States and that "Justice has been served".
"On Saturday, at my direction, the United States successfully concluded an air strike in Kabul, Afganistan and killed Al-Qaeda Amir Ayman al-Zawahiri," Biden said in a press briefing.
- This is the biggest blow to the miliant group after their leader Osama Bin Laden was killed in 2011. Zawahiri, an Egyptian eye surgeon who had a bounty of $25 million on his head, assumed the leadership after Laden and helped coordinate the September 11, 2001 attack.
Meanwhile, the Taliban condemned the drone strike and called it a violation of "international principles".
In 2020, the US and the Taliban signed a peace agreement under the Presidency of former US President Donald Trump. The deal stated the withdrawal of US troops from Afghan soil and Taliban would abate violence and guarantee it's soil will not be safe haven for terrorists.
