Breaking: Atleast 50 killed as Bridge in Morbi collapses

In a tragic incident in Morbi, Gujarat, atleast 50 people were killed after a cable bridge collapsed. The death toll is expected to rise higher as rescue operation is underway.

  • Local media reports suggest that around 400-500 people when the pull collapsed. Atleast 70 people have been rescued and rushed to the hospital.

The 140-year-old pull known as Julto pull was reopened to the public last week after being in renovation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the incident and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh to the next of the kin who lost their lives in the mishap. The injured would be given Rs 50,000.

The state government has also announced an ex-gratia as CM Bhupendra Patel expressed his sorrow over the tragedy.

"I express my condolences to the families of the citizens who lost their lives in the tragedy. The state government will provide Rs 4 lakh to the family of each deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured," the Gujarat CM said.
