Measles outbreak in Mumbai

As per various reports, Mumbai is currently witnessing an outbreak of measles. Between September and October, the financial capital of India has reported a total of 84 cases with the majority coming from the M-East ward that cover Govandi.

Last month, three children — all residents of a society in Govandi, lost their lives in a span of 48 hours.

Measles or as it is called "Khasra", is a highly contagious viral disease which mostly affects children. It is one of the leading causes of death and disability among young children.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is conducting door-to-door surveillance to identify suspected cases of the disease among children.

  • According to health experts, measles can spread through coughing and sneezing, close personal contact or direct personal contact with infected nasal or throat secretions. An infected child with measles can spread the virus to others for about eight days, starting four days before the rash appears and ending when the rash has been present for four days.

  • Initial symptoms include high fever which begins usually 10-12 days after the exposure with the virus. The person may develop running nose, cough, red eyes, sore throat and white spots inside the mouth. A classic symptom is skin rash which can last 7 days.

The BMC has already rolled out vaccination for this viral disease as they try to curb this outbreak.
