Rahul Gandhi's convoy halted in Manipur's Churachandpur

On Thursday, police barred Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's convoy en route to Churachandpur, one of the districts most affected by the ethnic violence in Manipur.

Earlier today, Gandhi landed in Imphal intended to visit relief camps in Churachandpur to meet with those who have been displaced by the conflict.

Since May of this year, over 50,000 people have taken refuge in more than 300 relief camps across Manipur due to ethnic violence.

The conflict began after a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organized on May 3 to protest against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, leading to clashes.

The tension was further fueled by the eviction of Kuki villagers from reserve forest land, leading to several smaller protests.

The violence has resulted in over 100 deaths between the Meiteis residing in and around the state capital Imphal Valley and the Kuki tribe, who live in the hills.
